Moscow opposes any deadlines and any settlement recipes in the inter-communal talks under UN auspices, a statement by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich says.
It is essential to achieve favourable external conditions for the talks which Moscow believes must be free of any external pressure or attempts to impose deadlines or settlement recipes, Lukashevich’s statement points out.
He notes that the Russian Foreign Ministry is ready to cooperate with its partners at the UN Security Council and all interested parties.
Russian diplomacy hopes that during the dialogue that will begin, the two sides will aim at achieving complete, fair and a viable solution to the Cyprus issue on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions and the High Level agreements of 1977 and 1979.
Concluding, the Russian Foreign Ministry stresses that it is convinced that a viable settlement in Cyprus is only possible on condition that an agreement is achieved between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
A meeting earlier today in Nicosia between the two community leaders, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, marked the resumption of the stalled UN-led peace talks. The negotiators of the two sides will meet later this week to begin their discussions, with a view at finding a mutually acceptable agreement that will be put to separate referenda.
